Efficient Heating for Those Cold Winter Nights

With over 50 years in the business, we have extensive experience in designing, installing, and troubleshooting all types of heating systems. We have and continue to lead the way in heating system technology. We were one of the first installers to begin extensively using radiant heating systems. Now, we have become specialists in the design and installation of high-efficiency natural gas and heat pumps heating systems.

Preventative Maintenance

One of the most important things you can do to ensure the longevity and trouble-free operation of your heating system is to stay on top of preventive maintenance. That’s why we recommend having a system tune-up and cleaning before putting your heating system into operation each season.

This tune-up includes but is not limited to:

  • Clean & inspect boiler burners & combustion chamber
  • Check boiler pressure & expansion tank
  • Check controls & pumps
  • Check safety switches & limits
  • Lubricate motors
  • Perform detailed combustion analysis
  • Check for proper flue draft
  • Inspect the base of the chimney for obstructions

Repairs & Replacements

Heating systems and their component parts only have a finite life span. Proper maintenance can greatly increase this life span, but not indefinitely. So periodically, repairs will be needed, and eventually, whole parts of the system will need to be replaced. Are you having problems with your heating system? Let us troubleshoot it for you so we can repair the parts that are broken and ONLY those parts.

  • Systems leaks
  • Relief valve dripping
  • Expansion tanks
  • Vent dampers
  • Gas valves
  • Thermocouples
  • Circulator pumps
  • Zone valves
  • Relays
  • Safety switches

High Efficiency Hydronic Systems

At Greenfield Plumbing & Heating, we specialize in the installation of high-efficiency natural gas or propane heating systems. High-efficiency systems offer several advantages over conventional gas or oil heating systems.

First, of course, is savings. New high-efficiency systems have ratings up to 98% AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency). This means these systems operate with far less wasted energy than older systems, which can have ratings as low as 60%.

Still, there are reasons beyond just money to make the switch. Natural gas has almost 40% lower carbon emissions per BTU than #2 heating oil. Combine that with much higher AFUE ratings and high-efficiency gas systems, which are a much better choice for the environment.

These systems also offer far greater control over your heat. Rather than just being on or off like a conventional heating system, they have the ability to modulate their output based on outdoor temperature. When paired with a smart or programmable thermostat, they offer far more consistent and even heating of your home, which means more comfort for you and your family.

They are also available in high-efficiency combination systems, which can replace both your boiler and water heater yet are smaller than both. The unit can also be hung on the wall, freeing up valuable floor space in your home.

Heat Pump & Dual Fuel Systems

Are you looking to install a new or replace an existing forced air heating system? A heat pump or dual fuel heating system is an excellent and highly efficient solution. Rather than burning gas to heat your home, a heat pump system works by absorbing and concentrating heat from the outdoor air. It then transfers that into your home and distributes it around the house. Because these systems are not creating their own heat, they are able to operate extremely efficiently. The heat pump system can also keep your home cool in the summer by transferring heat from the interior to the exterior, much like a traditional central A/C system. While heat pumps are a highly efficient way to heat your home, they do begin to lose effectiveness on those coldest days.

This issue can be solved by using a furnace as the air handler in your heat pump system, known as a dual fuel system. This means your system operates as a heat pump until the temperature drops below the point where it begins to lose effectiveness. At that point, the heat pump will shut off, and the gas furnace will take over as the heat source. This enables you to take advantage of the benefits of a heat pump system while still being able to effectively heat your home on those coldest northeast days.
